Good catch. Something like this is easy to believe and lament over without really thinking about it, but closer inspection shows that the numbers are meaningless.

Google Trends gives a slightly better idea of how meaningless this really is. Although you cannot see actual numbers, you can compare trends to get an idea of how many times something was searched for.

If you go for the last 30 days, and only list the trend 'who is osama bin laden', you get an increase of 30x... compared to how many times people normally search for osama bin laden.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=who+is+osama+bin+laden&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

If you compare the same query to something that is searched for all the time, like 'iPad', the 'Who is...' search falls off the graph entirely.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ipad%2C+who+is+osama+bin+laden&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

If you compare it to something that is searched for somewhat less than apple devices, such as 'Maine', you get a very very small ratio:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=maine%2C+who+is+osama+bin+laden&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

That said, 'WOW SO DUM AMERIKAR' may still have some validity:

No comments on any of the earlier editions? OK, they don't really have anything approaching design, but they're worth looking at. The original White Box set and supplements, Basic, Basic & Expert, Basic/Expert/Companion/Master/Immortals, Rules Cyclopedia... it's interesting seeing how the games evolved before (and during) AD&D's publication.

I was probably around your age when my friends and I discovered D&D (2nd Edition). I can totally identify with never successfully running a campaign. Our group was pretty diverse interest-wise, but the appeal of being able to have an adventure in something like Conan the Barbarian's world was something we shared.

When we'd gather to "play," we'd spend all of our time refamiliarizing ourselves with the rules, then we'd create our characters (getting character sheets photocopied was a big deal to a 10-yo!). Sometimes we'd take the time out to do draw our characters or their weapons. Then we'd proceed to actually playing the game.

Which usually consisted of finding the first weapon shop, experiencing a disagreement in the party, followed by attempting to kill the other party members. Sometimes we'd all gang up on the one person who wouldn't go with the party vote, essentially leaving that person to sit out of the rest of the game. Of course, the rest of the game was usually the rest of the party turning on each other.

Rocks fall. Everyone dies.

God, I hated being DM.

But, there are such great memories. A friend was playing DM.

DM: Ok, there is an evil castle up ahead.
Party: How do we know it's evil?
DM: The sky above is pitch black and there are lightning bolts shooting from the towers!

Oooh, something else from when the DM from above was a PC.
(different) DM: You see a group of twenty orcs up ahead.
Him: I run really fast and hide behind a bush!

Gotta love the mania that comes with staying up until 3am :-)

Hi! I don't think the font (Adobe Garamond) is to blame; it seems that something about the way Typekit works in certain browsers is messing it up. A real shame, too, because it looks super nice in Safari. If I could figure out how to suppress the Typekit stuff depending on browser, that would be awesome.

I suppose I could comment here instead of on Twitter.

Google has a couple examples of University Roman on the Tonight Show.

One of the things I liked least about 3rd edition page design was how unreadable it was in low light, like (say) reading in bed, or sometimes even at the game table. Really pretty, and really really hard to use!

Watching my almost-five-year-old playing with Star Wars Legos is really making me think about kid-friendly RPGs, and the design (visual and rules) of Essentials is very thought-provoking. More later, once thoughts have settled.

Maybe it's just that after you get the complaints out of the way, is that you can replace them by the aspects of the game you liked and didn't realize before. After all, this series has always had something special when it comes to the feelings it gives off. :)

The article is a great explanation describing what we can expect from the i-pad. I haven't begun to utilize my i-pod yet, and use it only for music. Hubby has an i-phone, and he is gradually realizing it is a mini computer. We are older, and the new technology can be overwhelming. The biggest leap for us in exposure to Apple devices, is the simplicity. Bravo, Apple!

Excellent post. I think a lot of the angst and disappointment towards the iPad may be because people keep on trying to categorize it as something they know. Either a smart-phone, a laptop, or a 'netbook'.

Maybe it's something new.

Still don't like the name though.
